Living from the inside out is coming from our deepest knowing rather than just our thinking. For those of us who have practiced thinking our way around the world for many years, there are practices to help us learn to connect to our innermost self for living. And it feels so good when it happens. Beyond words. Here is a beautiful writing from my niece, Katie Lewin, 16 years, a budding Yogini.
Eliminating first thing in the morning and about 20 minutes after each main meal is a healthy guideline. This will vary slightly with a person's constitution. When the body does not naturally eliminate from the bowels first thing upon rising in the morning, constipation is occurring. Toxins(ama) back up in the body and mind leading to diminished health and disease.
Many of us have learned to overeat. Having grown up in a large family with limited resources, I used to overeat because I was afraid there wasn't enough food. Later, overeating became a way to cover up feelings of discomfort and fear. Recently it was suggested that I stop eating when my body offered the 'first belch'. I didn't think I belched until much later after eating. I found out that I was running over the first belch.
Strengthening the digestive fire (agni) allows optimal absorption and assimilation of what our food and life has to offer us. If agni is weak, we may consume the very best foods yet be unable to transform them into something usable. Furthermore, whenever agni is debilitated, acceptance of life can become very difficult leading to disturbance in the mind and emotions.
